Dental Implants Q & A

What is a dental implant?

A dental implant is an artificial replacement for a tooth that's been lost to decay or trauma. It uses a titanium post that's implanted into the jaw bone and an artificial tooth or crown that's attached to the post.

Titanium is used in a wide array of medical procedures, including joint implants, due to its high level of biocompatibility, which means it fuses well with natural bone without causing reactions or side effects.

What should I expect during an implant procedure?

Implants require several visits to place. During the first visit, Dr. Foroutan will implant a metal post in your jaw bone where it will act as a root to support the prosthetic tooth.

If you don't have enough jaw bone to support the new implant, a bone graft can be performed to build up your jaw and enable it to support the implant.

Dr. Foroutan performs the graft procedure when the post is implanted. The post, and graft if used, will be left to fuse or integrate with the bone tissue for several weeks.

At the next appointment, a metal piece called an abutment will be placed on the post and an impression or mold will be made, so the lab can create a tooth that will fit the space and blend with the neighboring teeth.

During the third visit, Dr. Foroutan places the artificial tooth on the abutment and buffs it for a comfortable fit.

How will I need to care for my dental implant?

Dental implants look and feel like your natural teeth, and you can care for in the same way. Regular brushing and flossing, as well as routine trips to Dr. Foroutan, are important to ensure the gum around the implant is healthy. With good care, the implant lasts as long as a natural tooth.

What can I expect after an implant procedure?

You may experience some discomfort and bleeding on the day of the surgery. Dr. Foroutan may give you some medication, and if so, make sure to take all medication according to instructions.

You can also apply an ice bag on your face over the surgical site on the day of surgery for 10 minutes on and 5 minutes off to reduce swelling.

Often, there is a temporary loss of feeling in the operated area, and the tooth may feel loose.

To take care of the tooth properly following the procedure, do not:

  • raise your lips with your fingers to inspect the treated area.
  • smoke, spit, or use a straw on the day of the surgery
  • brush your teeth near the surgical site

You may need to visit Dr. Foroutan for the removal of sutures and follow up checks. Should any difficulties occur, do not hesitate to call Newport Beach Dentistry.
