Gum Disease

periodonticsPeriodontal disease is a bacterial infection that can damage and destroy the tissue and bones that support your teeth. Not only can it cause tooth loss if left untreated, it can also cause a host of other health problems. It is often caused by poor oral hygiene, and a number of other factors.

At Newport Beach Dentistry, we have experience in treating periodontal disease, and restoring patients to good oral health. We have a number of effective treatments for all stages of gum disease.

The Stages of Gum Disease

There are three main stages of gum disease:

Gingivitis

Gingivitis, or mild gum disease, occurs when plaque and tartar form around teeth because of food particles that are left behind from poor oral hygiene practices. Bacteria builds up in the plaque and tartar and starts causing inflammation. Plaque is a soft and sticky film that attaches itself to the surface of your teeth. It can cause gums to become red, swollen, and may even cause bleeding when you try and brush or floss your teeth. This stage of gum disease can be reversed by a dental cleaning, and good, consistent oral hygiene.

Periodontitis

If gingivitis is not treated properly, periodontitis can develop. Periodontitis causes structural damage to the tissues and bones that hold your teeth in place. In this stage of gum disease, bacteria has moved deep within the gums, and must be removed by root planing treatments or deep scaling of plaque and tartar buildup. Symptoms of periodontitis include receding gums, loose teeth, and bad breath.

Advanced Periodontitis

If periodontitis is not treated properly, more harm and damage can occur to gums and bones, and further surgery may be required. At this stage, tooth loss is common.

The Many Dangers of Gum Disease

Gum disease has been linked to many chronic illnesses and health problems, suggesting an unhealthy mouth can lead to other serious health problems. These health problems include:

  • Strokes
  • Diabetes
  • Heart disease
  • Cancer
  • Infertility
  • Premature child birth
  • Alzheimer’s disease

Study after study has shown a strong link between periodontitis and these serious health conditions. If you have any stage of gum disease, it is very important to get it treated before periodontitis develops. Once you have periodontitis you will always have it, and treatment efforts focus on ensuring that symptoms don’t worsen.

At Newport Beach Dentistry, we can treat every stage of gum disease, but there are things you can do for yourself as well.

If you are a smoker, or one who dips tobacco, you can greatly lessen your chances of gum disease by stopping. Smokers are up to seven times more likely to develop gum disease than non-smokers. Smoking can also lower the chances of successful treatment of gum disease.

If you are stressed out, you are more likely to develop gum disease. Stress weakens the immune system, and makes it more difficult for the body to fight off infection.

You also need to eat more a balanced diet. Your immune system is bolstered by getting proper nutrition. Especially beneficial are foods with antioxidant properties such as green, leafy vegetables and nuts. Vitamin C which can be found in citrus fruits and potatoes is also very beneficial.

Avoid clenching and grinding your teeth. Either of these actions can put an undue amount of force on supporting tissues of the teeth. This could hasten the destruction of these tissues.

Even those who practice good oral hygiene, and eat a healthy diet can be prone to gum disease. According to the American Academy of Periodontology, up to 30% of Americans are genetically susceptible to gum disease. Those who are predisposed to are up to six times more likely to develop gum disease of some form.

If you are in one of these high risk groups, you need to see your dentist more often for check-ups and dental cleanings.

If you think you have a form of gum disease, you need a dentist with experience in treating all three forms. You will find that at Newport Beach Dentistry.
